J.G. Johnson Sight Word Tag Program
Do you know... 25 words make up about one third of all reading text. 100 words make up about one-half of all reading material. 300 words make up 65% of all printed text!
To encourage fluent reading throughout all grades we are starting a Sight Word Tag Program. This is a home based reading program that requires parent participation to assist your child in improving their reading fluency.
Here is how it works:
1. Students will receive a list of the most frequently used words in print. The initial list will depend on a student's reading/grade level.
2. Students and parents will practice (at their own pace) reading the words at home.
3. When students can read the words quickly and accurately, a parent signs or initials the bottom of the list.
4. Students then bring that signed list to school, where they will be assessed by the teacher or teachers helper.
5. Only one set of words can be assessed a week. Students receive a Sight a Word Dog Tag if they can read the words quickly and accurately. They will also receive a star with their name on it to place in the hallway on the banners to indicate to everyone which level they have achieved.
6. Allowed Errors:
Kindergarten list of 25 words -No Errors
1st grade: 1-40 list - 1 error, 41-92 list- 1 error, and 93-133 list- 1 error
Any list of 200 or more words - 4 errors
7. Any hesitation will be considered incorrect. Students should read each word as quickly as they do their own name.
8. When students pass their current list, they will be given the next list to study.
9. With each list passed the student receives another Dog Tag.
We are really excited about this program and Know it will have a Positive Impact on all student's learning!!
